The eggs at Hannaford come from disgusting factories.

Hannaford’s egg suppliers cram hens in tiny cages.
THE PROBLEM

Imagine spending your entire life locked inside an elevator with at least eight other people. Animals kept in cages in Hannaford’s supply chain endure this kind of treatment and worse. Animal welfare scientists and veterinarians around the world have condemned this practice and consider it extreme animal cruelty.
It’s time for Hannaford to ban cages for good!

Hannaford’s parent company, Ahold Delhaize, pledged in 2016 to start phasing out battery cage eggs. That must’ve been a load of lies, since the company has made little progress.
Not even McDonald’s or Taco Bell use these eggs. Hannaford customers deserve better, and so do animals.

A 2023 study from the Prestage Department of Poultry Science at North Carolina State University found that eggs from caged systems are the “worst-quality eggs.”
Investigations into battery cage facilities, like those Hannaford source eggs from, have found instances of cannibalism, eggs covered in feces, maggot infestations, and dead birds left to rot.
-
A survey of customers who shop at Ahold Delhaize owned stores, including Hannaford, found that the overwhelming majority (85%) opposed caged hen housing, preferring that hens be kept in open barns. [3]
The survey also found that the company’s labeling is misleading to a significant portion of its customers, who incorrectly believe eggs with certain labels at Ahold Delhaize stores are cage-free. This confusion and potential mistrust put the company’s brand reputation at risk.

The Center for Food Safety says “confining animals indoor and packing them into dense living conditions creates a number of serious hazards.” Indeed, the Center opposes cages, reporting that cage-free eggs are “a better final product for consumers.” [1, 2]
